Why Choose Healthy, Oil-Free Puri?

Traditional pooris soak up a significant amount of oil during the deep-frying process, which increases their caloric density and fat content. By switching to an oil-free air-fried method, you get to enjoy several benefits:

Heart-Healthy: Significantly lowers your intake of saturated fats and cholesterol.

Weight Management: Cuts down unnecessary calories while keeping you full.

Mess-Free Kitchen: Say goodbye to oil splatters, heavy smoke, and the hassle of disposing off used frying oil.

Everyday Indulgence: Turns a "once-in-a-while" festive treat into an everyday staple.

The Viral "Water Puri" - Master the Method

The "Water Puri" method is a fantastic, completely zero-oil hack that uses hot water to cook the dough, followed by a quick roast in the Air Fryer to dry it out and puff it up.

Knead and Roll: Knead a slightly stiff dough using little water at a time. Let the dough rest for 30 minutes. Then roll puris that are neither too thick nor too thin.

Heat Water: Heat water in a wide pan. DO NOT add puris before water heats up.

Cook the Puri: Carefully drop the rolled pooris into the HOT water, only one or two at a time. Cooking puris in hot water is important – DO NOT skip this step or the puris won’t puff up while Air Frying. They will become flat and hard like a papad / cracker.

Wait for the Float: Puris will sink initially. After some time, they will float to the surface, indicating the dough is cooked.

Dry: Remove them gently with a slotted spoon and place them on a plate and let them rest for 5-7 minutes till their top is slightly dry.

Preheat the Air Fryer: It is crucial to PREHEAT the Air Fryer at 200°C / 390°F for 3 mins.

Roast/Puff: Transfer the boiled pooris into the PREHEATED air fryer basket, flipping them over upside down so that the slightly dry side is on the bottom. Place them in a single layer, DO NOT overcrowd.

Cook: Air Fry them at 200°C / 390°F for 3-4 mins or till they puff up and turn golden brown. Your fluffy 100% oil free Puris are ready.

Serve: Remove immediately and serve these no oil Pooris hot or keep them in a casserole lined with a cloth / kitchen roll to maintain softness.

4 Tips for the Best Healthy Pooris

  1. Stiff Dough: Keep your dough stiffer than regular roti dough.

  2. Roll Evenly: Ensure your pooris are rolled out with an even thickness and are neither too thick nor too thin. Too thick or thin puris might not puff up while air frying.

  3. Temperature Matters: Preheating Air Fryer to the right temperature is important. A hot environment is crucial for the puff. High heat creates the sudden burst of steam inside the dough that causes it to balloon.

  4. Serve Hot: Oil-free pooris tend to dry out faster than deep-fried ones. Serve them immediately while they are still hot and fresh!

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can you make Puri without deep frying in oil?

Yes, you can make puri without oil by cooking the rolled dough in hot water and then roasting in preheated air fryer at 200°C (390°F) for 3-4 minutes. This method creates healthy, fluffy pooris.

  • How do you make Air Fryer Pooris puff up?

To ensure poori in air fryer puffs up, knead a slightly stiff dough, first cook pooris in hot water and then in a preheated air fryer to 200°C (390°F). A sudden high heat is necessary to create the internal steam that makes the puri puff up like a balloon.

  • What is the viral Water Puri hack?

Water puri is a zero-oil cooking method where rolled dough is cooked in water until it floats. The boiled dough is dried slightly and then roasted in a preheated air fryer to puff up without using any oil.

  • Why are my Air Fryer Pooris hard instead of soft and fluffy?

Air Fryer Pooris become hard if cooked at a low temperature for too long. Always preheat the Air Fryer and use a maximum heat setting (200°C) for a quick 3-4 minute cook. Rolling pooris too thick or thin can also prevent them from puffing up.

  • How to store Puri made in Air Fryer?

It’s best to serve Air Fried Puris immediately after making while they are still hot and fresh. If you must store them, then keep Air Fried Pooris in an insulated casserole immediately after Air Frying as they tend to dry out faster than deep-fried ones.
